N.B. This posting is long and comprehensive, hence the instalmnents, and you may consider it worth saving/printing off for future reference! Hello All! The traffic on the lists seems to have increased considerably lately, not least with the release of many new CDs of censuses for the London and Middlesex areas, as well as other parts of the UK.. It is not always realised that except for the 1881 LDS transcriptions released a couple of years ago and now online, and a very few counties outside the London/Middlesex area, these CDs now coming on-stream are facsimiles of the pages in original Enumerators' Books [complete with blots, scratchings out, clerks' marks and sometimes illegible handwriting] arranged street-by-street within each Enumerator's District, which typically covered 200-500 dwellings. Thus it is impossible to search by surname (apart from the 1881 transcription), as there are no surname indexes on the CDs. To remedy this, various individuals, Family History Societies, and the online FREECEN project are compiling indexes to parts of the census. Indeed, some indexes, notably to the 1851 (which is largely covered by various family history societies) and Clive Ayrton's index to parts of the 1871, have been in existence for a number of years, laboriously compiled from the films. But there is no comprehensive index. Furthermore, confusion sometimes arises between Middlesex and London. >From the 1851 census, the Registrar-General separated out the census returns for the registration districts of what he called the metropolitan parts of the Counties of Middlesex, Surrey and Kent, together with the City of London. In 1855 this distinction was used by parliament to become the area subject to the jurisdiction of the newly-created Metropolitan Board of Works, and the same boundaries with little adjustment used to define the County of London when that was created in 1889. Finally in 1900 a few detached pockets of Middlesex in the County of London were transferred to the new County of London. The companies releasing CDs have followed the R-Gs definition of "counties", as used, too, in the "Piece Nos" of the PRO catalogue, for the census. S&N on their website http://www.genealogysupplies.com/ have a good map showing the approximate area covered by "London" census CDs as opposed to those for Middlesex, Kent and Surrey from 1851 onwards. Looking at this will often save the vexation of ordering the "wrong" set of CDs. The most comprehensive guide to the censuses on-line is that compiled by Barry Ruck, reproduced below [see parts 2-10]. Barry is always glad to learn of any updates. bruck@peterswoodharlow.freeserve.co.uk He also produces other guides - see www.peterswoodharlow.freeserve.co.uk Corrections and amendments to bruck@peterswoodharlow.freeserve.co.uk This FAQ may be found at homepage.ntlworld.com/barry.ruck and www.peterswoodharlow.freeserve.co.uk Last updated 12th February 2003 This list is very long. I recommend saving and printing for future reference. Specific questions regarding census: Question: When was the census taken ? ===================================== Answer : There has been a census taken in the United Kingdom every ten years since 1801. However, those for 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831 were statistical only and, therefore, of little or no assistance to the genealogist. In a very few places, a record of names was retained by the local enumerator and some of these fragments may be found in record offices (Check the Gibson Guide "Local Census Listings 1522 - 1930" for details). These listings are very sparse, but you may be lucky. The first census to be of real practical use to the genealogist was that of 1841, the first to record names nationally. Where can I see them? ======================================================================== NOTE: This FAQ lists the major sites holding Census Listings. There is a website listing online Census Indexes and Transcriptions for individual parishes etc. http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/barbgreg/ukcensus.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1891 & 1901 Census of Scotland. =============================== Details from http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ "It costs £6 (approx. EUR10 or USD9), payable by credit or debit card, to access the index database. This gives you 30 'page credits' and allows access for a period of 24 hours (starting from the time your credit card payment is authorised ), however many times you log on and off in that time. If you download 30 pages before your 24 hours is up, you can buy a further 30 page credits for £6, and your access time is extended for a further 24 hours. You will not lose your existing credits when your 24-hour session is expired; when you buy more credits they will simply be added to your existing credits. When you are logged in to the site but have been inactive for more then 30 minutes, you will be asked to log in again the next time you try to use the site. You can access any of your previous searches and downloaded images, without charge, simply by logging in to the site. There is no time limit on how long you can keep these searches and images. You can also order copies of any of your previously viewed records at any time. Charging is based on the number of pages actually displayed, not on the number of records retrieved. Each time you do a search, you are told how many records have been found; each record refers to a specific event, i.e. a particular birth/baptism, marriage or death. Before displaying the records, you have the opportunity to re-define, and narrow the search, without displaying the results. When you decide to view these records, they are displayed in pages each containing a maximum of 25 records. So if a search returned 45 names, this would be equivalent to two pages; a single name would be equivalent to one page. Since you can view a maximum of 30 pages of records for each £6 access fee, this means that you might download anywhere between 30 records (ie 30 pages each containing a single name) and 750 records (i.e. 30 pages each containing 25 names). To view an image costs five credits. If you wish to order an official, legally admissible copy (referred to as an "extract") of any register entry, you can do this online as well. Your request is automatically forwarded to the General Register Office for Scotland to fulfill the order and mail the extract to you. A fixed fee of £10 (approx. EUR16 or USD15) is payable via credit or debit card per extract." --------------------------------------------------------------------- The 1901 Census England & Wales. ================================ The 1901 Census Online service is now available 24 hours a day 7 days a week, as a full Internet service. www.census.pro.gov.uk --------------------------------------------------------------------- The 1891 Census England & Wales. ================================ Ancestry.co.uk http://www.ancestry.co.uk/ are making this available on a county by county basis. Please note that this is an on going project. http://freecen.rootsweb.com/project.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------- Question: What information do I need to supply when I ask for a lookup ? ======================================================================== Answer: As much as possible! Surname, Given Name, Age, Spouse / Parents ( If known ) and finally both the Town and County where you believe them to be residing. Remember, some modern counties have names different to those given in the census. These CD's are only searchable by name and *not* by address unless you buy some extra ( expensive ) software. ( This is becoming easier as more people acquire the V.3 software but is still uncommon ). Please do not ask for lookups at a specific address, ask for specific people. Please remember that any lookup requested on a census other than 1881 or those listed below, will involve someone searching through micro fiche or film, and is unlikely to be carried out. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Question: Which Census are available on C.D. ROM ? Where can I buy them? ======================================================================== Answer: At the moment, the only full census on C.D. ROM for the United Kingdom ( excl. They also produce the British Vital Records C.D. which ..." contains information on more than 4.7 million christenings, births, and marriages that occurred in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland from 1500 to 1888. This information came from British church and vital records collected as a part of the church's extraction program. The amount of information varies greatly by time period and locality. " .... , and the Pedigree Resource File which is described as follows, ....." These contain family history records submitted by individuals through the FamilySearch® Internet Genealogy Service. Family information is organized in family groups and pedigrees, similar to how it is displayed in Ancestral File. However, the Pedigree Resource File displays each submitter's information exactly as it was submitted, not combined with information from other submitters, as is done in Ancestral File. Notes and sources are also displayed. Over one million individuals are included on this CD. " .... BVRI Version 2. With a CD drive on your computer, the program requires an IBM compatible PC running Windows 95 or later, 16 Mb RAM, (32Mb or more recommended), a minimum of 10 Mb free disc space and a SVGA monitor. All family and social historians appreciate the value of the census and that of 1851 is of particular interest as it is the first where precise ages, relationships and places of birth are given. Clearly it is an important source of information without which our researches would be made very much more difficult. Additionally the CD contains extensive demographic information extracted from the census, and there are a number of features that will assist its use. The basic entries have been classified in a variety of ways including by occupation, by age, by birthplace, etc. From these classifications a series of comprehensive tables make it possible to use the CD to compare the structure of the population in one parish with either the county total or with neighbouring parishes. These tables should be particularly useful to schools for project work and those writing a parish history. Other notes explain how the census can be used to examine the various aspects of life in the county in 1851. Amongst the topics examined are the clergy, doctors, life in mansions and in other households with a large number of servants. Other notes explore important trades including lace making, straw plaiting, wood manufacturing, retailing and agriculture. Similarly seemingly unrelated adjacent entries in a town or village can be displayed as enumerated and these often reveal the reason for subsequent relationships - quite literally how the boy met and married the girl in question; she lived next door!! Search results can be printed and exported into another package and notes on places of birth may be of special interest. These include an analysis by parish, adjacent parish, and within and without the county and country as a whole. This is an essential tool in advancing knowledge of your mid 19th century Buckinghamshire ancestors. Available from 11th September 2002 (expected release date) from: Bucks FHS Sales, 3 Swallow Lane, Stoke Mandeville, Aylesbury. Bucks HP22 5UW.
